Artist Statement

My work explores relationships, describing the essence of experiences and situations, often symbolically, sometimes through narration.

Through the layering of images, using original printmaking, mixed media and oil on paper and canvas, I build a composition where the physical merges with the spiritual. The inner landscape of our bodies integrates with the outer landscapes of our lives.

Microscopic patterns in natural forms and figures are magnified and transformed using delicate Japanese papers printed in luminous colours which overlap in layers.  Recent work continues to consider the passage of precious time, changes I family relationships, harmonies and heartbreaks – things that can strike a universal chord.

More recently I combine printmaking with the use of beeswax, using the wonderful  ancient  technique of encaustic painting but with a contemporary touch. This gives an extra dimension to my work which is influenced by the places and landscapes where I visit and live, around the world.

Global issues are now of great concern and are reflected in my recent work, for example, earthquakes, tectonic plates, and the effects on rock structures in Ireland and landscapes in and around the Grand Canyon.

I am also concerned about problems with the environment and especially global warming and the melting of icebergs and its affect on animals and life in the Arctic and mankind as a whole. These are themes are being explored in my encaustic monoprints.
